A connected home for the whole household
Nokia's Smart Home platform brought security cameras, environmental sensors, and a central hub into one product. I led UX for setup and everyday use.
Many products in the category were hard to install, sent too many alerts, and split their features across separate apps. Ours needed to work for everyone in a household, not just the person who set up the Wi-Fi.
Research in people's homes
We visited households in three countries. That changed the priorities. Setup had to cope with weak signals and interruptions. Alerts had to be useful without becoming noise. Permissions had to make sense for adults, children, guests, and caregivers sharing a home.
What we designed
- Guided setup for the hub and connected devices, without a manual.
- An information model that worked for one camera or a house full of devices.
- Quiet default states and clearer alerts when something needed attention.
- Permissions and controls for different people in the household.
My role
I directed the UX work, used the research to set product priorities, and led the design of setup, monitoring, notifications, and shared controls.
